Yes, always. Halo Lytt never requires a SIM, because it has no cellular hardware at all. There is no configuration in which a SIM is needed, supported, or even possible. Worth spelling out, because parents comparing kids wearables often meet devices that technically function without a SIM but lose most of their purpose along with it.
How the sync actually works
The band records sleep, recovery, stress, activity, heart rate, breathing and skin temperature on the wrist. It pairs over Bluetooth with the parent's phone, and when the two are in range the readings transfer across. From there the phone's existing internet connection, mobile or wifi, sends the data to the Halo app.
So the band is never independently online. It has no address on any network, receives nothing, and is not reachable by anyone, including you. Data moves one way: sensor, to phone, to app.
What happens when the phone is not nearby
The band keeps recording. It does not need the phone present in order to measure, only in order to hand the data over. A child can be at school all day with the phone at home, and the day's readings sync when the two are next together. This is the practical point behind the school-day case, which is most days.
What "no SIM" costs, and what it buys
Costs you: no calling, no messaging, no live location, and no way to reach the band remotely. If any of those is why you are shopping, stop here and buy a connected watch instead.
Buys you: 30 or more days on a charge, because the cellular radio is the single largest power draw in a wearable. No monthly bill, ever. Nothing to activate and nothing to cancel. A kids smartwatch with an active SIM is generally charged daily, and a device sitting on a charger at bedtime is a device not measuring sleep.
